Gheorghe Lazăr laid the foundations of The Academic School for Philosophical and Mathematical Sciences, which was part of the ”Saint Sava” Superior Academy. The school set up by Gheorghe Lazăr educated mark-off and surveying engineers.

Gheorghe Lazăr is involved in the 1821 Revolution alongside Tudor Vladimirescu. During the revolution, the activity of the school was suspended. Gheorghe Lazăr's students became military engineers for Tudor Vladimirescu's army.

Ion Heliade-Rădulescu, 20 years old at that time, becomes director of the school until 1828. The beginning of the Russo-Turkish War and the plague epidemic determined the suspension of school activity.

Petrache Poenaru, the inventor of the world's first fountain pen, is appointed head of the ”Saint Sava” College. Later that year, Poenaru became Director of the National Schools Inspectorate, a sort of current Minister of Education.

In the context of the 1848 Revolution, the activity of all schools was stopped as they were transformed into hospitals or barracks. The schools restarted their activity in 1851.

Léon Louis Chrétien Lalanne becomes the director of the newly established School for Public Works Engineers. From the start, Lalanne was concerned with introducing the French language, one of his wishes being to bring foreign engineers to the school. Thus, in the second year of activity, Lalanne requested Barbu Știrbei, the ruler of Wallachia, to allow teaching in the French language within the school. Also, the school was going to have a technical library and a translator to help students understand technical terms in French.

The School for Bridges and Roads, Mines and Architecture is established by Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the ruler of the Romanian United Principalities. In the first years, the courses were held within the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences of the University of Bucharest.

By the decree of Prince Carol I, The School for Bridges, Roads, and Mines is founded. In its 14 years of existence, the school managed to survive and kept educating generations of students, despite the many governments it lived through, the various boards, and the fluctuating budgets.

Gheorghe I. Duca becomes the head of the school. The school acquires a new structure under the name of The National School for Bridges and Roads.

Thanks to Gheorghe I. Duca's efforts, works begin for the construction of the new school which will have a capacity of 100 students.

The Chemistry Lab of the School for Bridges and Roads, the first technological lab in Romania, is set up by chemistry professor Alfons Saligny. Here, the materials used in major construction works such as the Carol I Bridge, the Cernavodă aqueducts over the Danube, and the docks in Constanța Harbour were tested.

The Commission of the National School for Bridges and Roads is founded, with the role of examining if graduates of foreign technical schools had an equivalent diploma to the ones issued by the National School for Bridges and Roads.

Constantin Mironescu establishes the Department of Electrical Engineering and appoints Nicolae Vasilescu-Karpen, a prolific graduate of the Superior School of Electricity in Paris and the future inventor of the Karpen pile, as full-time professor with an indefinite contract.

The Polytechnic School is set up by a decree-law signed by King Ferdinand I. It had 4 departments: Electromechanics, Civil Engineering, Mines and Metallurgy, and Industries.

The Industrial Museum of the Polytechnic School is opened. Its collections were made up of donations and things bought from the school funds. The museum was open for visits until 1948 when it was destroyed by a fire.

On the 7th of May, The Polytechnic School changes its name to King Carol II Polytechnic School. It had 5 departments: Construction, Electromechanics, Mines, Industries, and Forestry.

The school receives the right to award the scientific title of Doctor in Engineering.

Welton J. Crook becomes the first person to receive the title of Doctor in Engineering.

The Faculty of Industrial Chemistry is founded as a result of the incorporation of the Industrial Chemistry Institute of the Faculty of Sciences at the Polytechnic School.

King Carol II Polytechnic School becomes Politehnica of Bucharest after the abdication of King Carol II. The school continues to hold its courses even during the war.

The Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest is officially recognized by a government decree on August 3rd, 1948. It had 4 faculties: Mechanics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry and Textiles.

The Faculty of Transports of the ”Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej” Railway Institute is transferred to the Polytechnic Institute.

The Faculty of Agricultural Mechanics, now the Faculty of Biotechnical Systems Engineering, is founded.

The ”New Complex of Buildings for the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest” Project starts.

The campus of The Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest is opened.

After the fall of communism, the institution changed its name to University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest.

The library of the university opens. The first edition of POLIFEST takes place.

The university receives the Royal Decoration ”Nihil Sine Deo” from the Royal Family of Romania.

University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest celebrates 200 years of existence.

The university changes the name to National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest on its 205th anniversary and as a result of the merger with the University of Pitești.
